NOVA Academy OC extends our proven early college high school model and is intentionally designed to prepare middle school students—particularly English Learners, low-income students, and those from historically underrepresented backgrounds—for the rigor of college and career pathways that begin in high school.

Early College Model
To ensure a strong foundation for academic success, NOVA Academy OC introduces students to the values and expectations of the early college model. By beginning this journey in middle school, students are better prepared to transition into rigorous high school curriculum and dual enrollment opportunities. Our program offers a seamless, developmentally appropriate transition from middle school through high school, providing continuous academic, social-emotional, and college-readiness support throughout students’ secondary education journey.
Capstone Project
Through this long-term, student-driven project, students research a topic of interest, apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and present their findings, helping them develop independence, communication skills, and confidence while making meaningful connections across subject areas. Each year, students build upon the foundation established in previous grades, creating a cumulative Capstone experience that reflects their growth and learning over time.
Common Core and College-Aligned Curriculum
The Common Core State Standards provide clear, consistent learning goals in English Language Arts and Mathematics, helping ensure that students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills needed for success in college, careers, and everyday life. Students at NOVA Academy OC will also gain early exposure to career pathways and postsecondary opportunities, equipping them to succeed as they transition to high school.
Visible Learning
Visible Learning aims to make student learning as visible as possible. This means that all students should be able to see how their efforts are contributing to their education and fully recognize what is required to succeed academically. Through this approach, teachers focus less on “transmission” (how they are teaching) and more on “reception” (how well students are learning). Therefore, Visible Learning creates an environment of understanding as teachers self-evaluate and engage in dialogue directly with students to determine how they can improve instruction and student performance.
Studies have shown the positive effects of Visible Learning can be seen across all levels of education, from kindergarten to college. Students may experience increased motivation and desire to learn. They may also begin to feel more comfortable with their own abilities, which can lead to better performance in other areas of schoolwork. In addition, visible learners will undoubtedly develop a better understanding of the material, making it easier for them to apply their knowledge in other areas. This can be especially beneficial for students who are struggling with a particular subject or concept.
Moreover, students benefit from a teaching environment where they can express their ideas and opinions freely. The more they are able to participate in the classroom discussion, the more likely they will be to retain their knowledge and apply it later in life.
Family
Family class is a crucial component of NOVA Academy OC’s success. Student-centered learning environments, including SEL, support and promote personalization, engagement, and close, caring relationships among students and staff. Family class is designed to build stronger relationships between students and staff, while fostering a sense of belonging and community among students.
